Hi everyone, I’m visiting Copenhagen as a solo traveler next month and wanted to know what I can visit now. I’ve got the main spots like Nyhavn and the Little Mermaid on my list, but what are some local attractions that often get overlooked? I love photography and cool architecture, or just interesting neighborhoods to wander around in. Also, is it easy to meet people or is it better to just enjoy the solitude?
Hi @lynn - It’s been a while since I was in Copenhagen and I’m thinking I should be visiting Scandinavia again soon; possible with a drive through the Baltic States.
As for your love of photography and cool architecture, here’s a couple of thought.
Copenhagen University Library (The Black Diamond)
Inaugurated in 1861, this neo-Gothic building features a stunning painted barrel ceiling and two-story bookshelves. It was only recently opened to the public in October 2023, making it a fresh spot for photographers who appreciate grand interiors and historic architecture.
For cool neighbourhoods, Christiania offers a unique vibe with homemade houses, galleries, organic cafés, and street art. It’s a great place to wander, capture colourful and unconventional scenes, and experience a different side of the city away from typical tourist spots.
Kødbyen, the ‘meatpacking district’. is known for its trendy restaurants and Danish-style burgers, but it also has an industrial-chic aesthetic that’s great for urban photography and exploring local nightlife or dining.
Copenhagen is generally a friendly city, and solo travellers often find it easy to meet people, especially in cafés, hostels, or social spots like Christiania or the Meatpacking District.
The city also lends itself well to solitude and reflective wandering, especially in quieter neighbourhoods, parks, or along the harbour.
So whether you want to socialise or enjoy your own company, Copenhagen offers a good balance.
I always like to do a bit of both. In quiet moments I feel the vibe, then enjoy local contact to find out more.
Have fun!
