Doing Amsterdam solo in May (I’m 28, F) and my hotel is near Nieuwmarkt which I think puts me on the edge of the Red Light area. I’m not going to go “see” the RLD as a tourist thing, but I might cut through it walking back from dinner around 9 or 10pm.
Is that actually fine or am I going to feel super weird? I’ve read that bachelor/stag parties can get rowdy and the vibe isn’t exactly welcoming to women alone. Should I just take a longer route around? I’m not easily spooked but also don’t love being catcalled lol.
@caroline from my experience, this area is usually so busy with tourists at night that there is nothing weird about it. It just feels like a busy street in a city. So in my opinion, you’ll be fine walking through it at night.
Nieuwmarkt sits right next to the Red Light District, but the area around Nieuwmarkt itself is busy, central, and full of normal evening foot traffic, restaurants, locals, tourists, and bikes everywhere. Walking through or along the edge of the RLD around 9–10 pm as a solo woman is extremely common. The vibe is more “tourist circus” than dangerous.
I’ve been to Amsterdam a couple of times. The red light district and the fringes feel very safe as it’s a tourist hot spot. In general I personally feel safer in the busier area’s rather than in quiet isolated streets further out. As someone said above it is like a tourist circus after all in this area
