NYC things to do beyond the usual tourist spots?

This will be my third visit to NYC, going in April for 4 days. I’ve done a lot of the ‘must see’ sights already, including Statue of Liberty, MoMa, Broadway show, Central Park (but will probably still go back here), Time Square (will not go back here!) etc. I’m looking for some more hiden/less famous attractions that perhaps I havent thought of or heard of before. Any recommendations of what else would be good to see and do? I’m pretty much open to anything, I love food, sports, history, art, music.

@josh Since it’s your third visit, I’d skip the obvious and lean into neighborhoods and local experiences.

If you like music, go to Harlem for a live jazz night — much more memorable than another Times Square evening. The vibe feels authentic and intimate.

For something fun at night, try finding a speakeasy-style bar (there are plenty hidden behind unmarked doors). It’s a cool way to experience NYC’s nightlife beyond the typical rooftop bars.

If you’re into sports, catching a local game (NBA, NHL, or even baseball if the season has started) is such a New York experience — the energy is unreal.

You could also explore neighborhoods like Williamsburg, the Lower East Side, or even take the ferry to Roosevelt Island for a different skyline perspective.

NYC is best experienced by neighborhood, not by checklist.

Too late for you Josh but maybe someone else. I visited the Frick Collection on 5th Ave. It’s a gilded age mansion with art treasures sculptures and visiting art exhibitions. I was fortunate enough to see my favourite Renoir there. Afterwards we walked down to 57th ave for lunch at The Russian Tea Room a very old restaurant of New York with an interesting interior. Food was delicious and they have things like Vodka tasting flights and Caviar and champagne. The food menu cost was reasonable just don’t start getting carried away with the vodka caviar or Champagne! This was 10 years ago but I still remember that lovely day as a stand out, and have spent hours trying to recreate the potato salad dressing.

Also, don’t skip walking the High Line at sunset and grabbing food in Williamsburg — both feel much more local and less touristy :slightly_smiling_face:

I am also a bit late for this but I would recommend for future travellers to do a NYC food tasting tour! Make sure it will include China Town and Little Italy! Both amazing neighbourhoods with amazing history and culture. I would also recommend going to a real bagel shop and getting that lox with cream cheese bagel for breakfast with a cup of coffee.
