Heading to Barcelona for a week and I’m a bit overwhelmed by the “top 10” lists which all seem to be the same crowded spots. Aside from Sagrada Familia (which I know I have to see), what are some things to do in Barcelona that feel a bit more authentic? Maybe a specific market that locals actually use, or a neighborhood festival? I want to get a feel for the real city, not just the souvenir shops.
I will be travelling in late March if that helps with the suggestions.
Thank you all in advance
Of all the places in Spain, Barcelona was not near the top of my list for favorites. I don’t want to burst your bubble, as there are still plenty of fun things to do there. Yes, those top 10 lists will all say the same things, and many of those sights and attractions ARE worth seeing. Wandering around the Gothic Quarter is fun, but you’ll see the tourist traps there too. Some of the other neighborhoods will feel more modern and less historical.
With a full week, this is more than enough time to get out of the city.
Costa Brava is amazing! Girona and the coastal towns are the highlights, but there’s plenty in the countryside, too.
You can also take a train to Madrid in just a few hours. Spend a few days there, and visit Toledo and other nearby spots.
You can catch a train down to Valencia, too. It’s my favorite of the larger Spanish cities. Nearby beaches and small towns are available if you want to get out of that city for a few days also.
Spending a few days somewhere else will make your trip more enjoyable, IMO.
What made you choose Barcelona, and why a full week? Have you already done the rest of Spain? Is this part of a larger trip, or just a one-time thing?
