I have some annual leave coming up and would love to escape the heat and take the family to a lake. We were originally planning Lake Garda, but given how warm this summer has been, we might plan further north in Austria
I’ve been Zell Am See, Neusiedler See and Wörthersee and would consider revisiting, but is there anywhere better. Not interested in being back in Hallstadt, prefer a slightly quieter location, with beautiful views and opportunities to cool off in the water.
Any tips?
Thanks!
Hi @AmRambler. Austria is absolutely the right call for lakes!
Since you want to avoid the Hallstatt crowds, I’d suggest Gleinkersee as a great alternative in the same area, beautiful, much quieter, and well worth it. That whole region is dotted with lakes, so you could easily combine it with Mondsee, Attersee, or Traunsee, all stunning and far less hectic than the more famous spots.
Over in Styria, Grüner See is a must-see. The water is clear and green, and the scenery is absolutely breathtaking.
And here’s an insider tip: if you find yourself near Vienna and fancy a quick day trip, Lunz am See is a hidden gem. Very pretty, not touristy at all, and incredibly easy and cheap to get to. Hope you find the perfect spot!
How will you be travelling?
If driving, you can combine a number of lakes.
Get a good map and look south from Vocklabruck: Traunsee, Attersee, Mondsee, Wolfgansee, and Fuschlsee.
We’ve driven that area a number of times and always find something different.
I should do an article about Austrian Lakes.
Aaah these are all great tips, thank you both!
We will be traveling by car so are quite flexible. I think we drove passed Traunsee before and remember thinking it was beautiful, so that are could be a good call again.
I have cooled off already just thinking about it!
My friend took me to this lake called Neusiedler See while I was visiting Vienna. Quick drive and fun to swim! It was so relaxing and the water was beautiful!
