We are staying in Taormina and want to visit Mount Etna. Is it easy enough to drive there ourselves and hike a bit, or is it better to take one of those 4x4 guided tours? I’m a bit nervous about the road conditions and where to park. If anyone has done this day trip recently, let me know what worked best for you!
Driving yourself from Taormina to Mount Etna is certainty doable.
From Taormina it usually takes about an hour or so to reach the base areas like Rifugio Sapienza; a common starting point for hikes and cable car rides up the volcano.
Road conditions are generally manageable, but travel times can be longer than expected due to mountain roads and traffic, so an early start is recommended to avoid crowds and to get good views before clouds roll in by mid-morning.
Parking is available at main visitor spots like Rifugio Sapienza, but spaces fill up quickly, so arriving early is key to securing a spot.
If you want to hike independently, you can skip the cable car and do a self-guided hike from the base, but the hike up to the craters can be somewhat monotonous and less scenic compared to guided routes.
For more interesting hikes around craters like Barbagallo or to reach the summit, a guide is required for safety reasons and to navigate the terrain properly.
Guided 4x4 tours are recommended if you want a stress-free experience and to access the more spectacular parts of Etna, including summit hikes.
Guides know the best routes, provide safety, and often include transport from Taormina, so you don’t have to worry about parking or road conditions. You can also relax during the drive and enjoy the scenery without the stress of driving mountain roads, if you’re not used to them.
Hi @joanna, super easy to drive up and park at the beginning of the gondola/hike. I have done both. The gondola is expensive but you can also only pay for one way up and then walk down. At the end of the gondola, you can then walk further up to some craters or drive up with a bus which you can get tickets then and there. If you actually want to hike further up you will need to book a guide.
@joanna I visited Mount Etna from Taormina with a guided tour and I was really happy with that decision.
Driving yourself is definitely possible, but I personally preferred going with a local tour. They handled transportation, parking, and timing, and our guide explained a lot about the volcano’s history and geology — which made the experience much more meaningful.
Etna isn’t just a “viewpoint”; understanding what you’re actually looking at makes a big difference. Also, depending on weather and volcanic activity, access areas can change, and local guides are up to date on what’s safe and open.
If you’re feeling nervous about road conditions or logistics, I’d recommend booking a local tour from Taormina. It made everything very smooth and stress-free for me.![]()
