I’ve read so many horror stories about the Circumvesuviana train being hot, crowded, and full of pickpockets. Is this really the only way to get from Naples to Pompeii? Is the Campania Express any better/reliable? Or should we just bite the bullet and pay for a taxi? We will have luggage with us which is my main concern.
Hi @amanda
The Campania Express is a tourist-oriented regional train service running between Naples and Pompeii (and other nearby sites).
It is more comfortable, less crowded, and faster than the Circumvesuviana.
It stops at the main Pompeii station (Pompei Scavi - Villa dei Misteri), which is very close to the archaeological site.
This train has reserved seating and tends to be cleaner and more reliable.
As service is limited, you should check the timetables carefully when making plans.
It is more expensive than the Circumvesuviana but still affordable compared to private transport.
There are also public buses, so look into that, but it takes longer than the train.
You can also find short tours that run day-trips that cover transportation and lunch (for example on websites like Viator or GetYourGuide). You’ll likely want a tour guide for the ruins anyway, so for just a bit more money, these companies provide transportation and organize a lunch. Some of these guided tour options also DO NOT include a tour guide, so they are cheaper (you just get transportation and the audio guide device with your entry ticket).
Personally, I think the train is totally fine… but YES it can get crowded during peak times and during the busy travel season of the summer. But I would still recommend that over anything else.
@amanda Yes, the Circumvesuviana is the most common way to get from Naples to Pompeii. It can be crowded, but many people use it without issues — you just need to stay alert.
If you’re traveling with luggage, I would personally consider the Campania Express. It’s more tourist-oriented, less crowded, and generally more comfortable, especially if you don’t want to stress about space.
That said, I do think it’s important to be realistic about Naples. Years ago, my car was stolen right in front of our hotel. Unfortunately, theft rates are relatively high there compared to many other Italian cities.
I don’t say this to scare you — just to emphasize being very mindful. Keep your bags close, avoid putting valuables in easy-to-reach pockets, and stay aware of your surroundings, especially in train stations and on local trains.
If you prefer maximum ease and peace of mind with luggage, a private transfer or taxi would obviously be the simplest option — just more expensive.
Naples is fascinating and full of character, but it’s definitely a place where you need to be a bit street-smart.![]()
