I am looking for a trip that starts in Tokyo but I am unsure whether its worth traveling back to Tokyo? I am seeing a lot of potential itineraries finishing in either Osaka or Kyoto. Will it be easy to find a flight back from either of these cities if I live in Australia? Most flights from Australia fly in and out of Tokyo and I would rather have a direct flight home at the end of my trip. Would it be worth it to head back to Tokyo just for the flight or will I be wasting an entire day of traveling just making my way back to Tokyo to fly out the following day? I really don’t want to waste time or money because I know Japan is expensive.
If you’re ending in Osaka or Kyoto, Osala has an international airport which is called Kansai International Airport (KIX). Some airlines should fly direct to Australia from there! If you haven’t taken the the Shinkansen (bullet train) it would be a great experience too. From Osaka/Kyoto takes ~2.5–3 hrs to Tokyo. Super fast and easy, so it won’t waste a whole day.
So, check if you can get a direct flight from Osaka first. If not, the train makes returning to Tokyo pretty smooth ![]()
I’m planning my trip to Japan right now, and I think the best way will be to fly out of Osaka. I will for sure depend on the flight timing too, but the flights are similar, so it should be a good option, if you need to go back to Tokyo, then bullet train is the fastest way to get there, as mention above
I flew into Tokyo and out of Osaka as I also did a tour that started in one city and ended in another. We flew into Tokyo a few days early to have some extra time there and then we also stayed a few extra days at the end in Osaka. I would ensure you have enough time in each city, don’t cut Osaka short just to make a flight as it’s an epic city with so many corners to explore!
While yes maybe the flight transit time is longer from Osaka if you have to take the train back to Tokyo then you are wasting time needing to get to the train station, wait for the train, be on the train , then find another hotel or make your way to airport. These all add up in time.
