Transportation in Tokyo

Hi there, I’m interested in visiting Tokyo, and I would like to ask for some advice about transportation within the city. I’ve heard that we can buy subway passes to visit the different places in the city. Any experienced traveler who can provide some insight about this service?

Hi there! Yes, the subway passes are a thing and they’re available to be bought in the airport or any major station, also most ticket machines have an English language option, so it will be easier to select the one you need

I travelled to Japan last year. You can purchase a Suica card at most underground stations or just look up where to purchase. There is even a digital version available to download - super easy to use! It is just a top up card like most cities have available.

I second @Steff_789 . Travellers can get Suica or Pasmo cards from ticket machines at the airport train station as well. Everyone talks about how difficult is it to navigate public transportation in Japan, however, I found it pretty easy. Google Maps will be your best friend - if you pop your destination into Maps, it’ll tell you exactly which platform to navigate to and which car to board, along with the exact exit to take to get to where you need to go.

Buses are also an option, but to be honest, I always ever caught the train or walked if need be. Much, much easier.

One thing to note about Suica (unsure about Pasmo), is that you can use it to pay for goods at convenience stores, cafes, etc. so it makes for a handy travel card as well.

Transportation in Japan (specifically the subway) is incredibly easy and reliable! As a few people already mentioned, you can get the Suica Card to make it even easier. I would get the digital version added to your Apple Wallet so you can easily tap your phone on and off. Also, using Google Maps is super convenient and accurate. The trains are always on time, and Maps will even tell you which carts are less busy/what is the best way to exit the station to get to your destination!
