Viking River Cruises: Are the "included excursions" enough or do you need the paid ones?

My wife and I are looking at booking our first river cruise (Rhine Getaway) with Viking. It’s a lot of money so I’m trying to figure out the real cost. They say one shore excursion is included in every port. Are these actually good? Or are they just basic “walk around for 30 mins” tours? I don’t want to get there and realize we need to pay another $1000 for the “optional” tours to actually see the cool stuff.

My husband and I went on our first cruise last year it was the Christmas Market cruise on the Danube with Viking they really do have good excursion program built in we did end up adding one paid excursion to Czech while we were on the boat and were so glad that we did. It was highly recommended by the onboard coordinator and it had been one that we had seen and thought we may like to do.
Seek out the coordinator when you arrive on the ship let them know your likes and dislikes and they will make sure you are having your best moments at all times.

Happy travels
