I’m planning to do India, Sri Lanka and Japan. Do you think I should take US dollars in addition to local currency? I always like to plan in advance and have finances sorted in advance so any advise will be much appreciated
Having lived in Japan, I can confirm that USD will not be accepted in Japan, so it’s definitely better to get cash out in yen. Most places are starting to accept card though, which makes things easier.
Unsure about Sri Lanka sorry!
USD is not accepted in India, you are better off taking INR or trying digital payments
Download Revolut or Wise! It lets you exchange currency in seconds AND you can withdraw local currency in any ATM with the physical card! It is a game changer!
Just recently traveled to India and Sri Lanka and always good to have cash on hand as you will travel to some remote places where card is not always accepted and ATMs cant be found everywhere. Definitely take local currency in both destinations, even if they allow you to pay in USD, they usually add a mark up.
I agree with everyone! I have never been to Sri Lanka but they still have a lot of cash only restaurants etc so better to have some extra cash in Japan especially you’re exploring rural areas. Also check the rates if you’re exchanging from USD!
