I’m heading to Thailand in a month and would like to know how much money to bring and if it’s preferable to bring cash or if a credit card works fine?
@william How long are you travelling for? I usually bring about C$500–1,000 in cash to start with and take out more if I need it. You can easily take out cash from ATMs, but keep in mind that Thai banks will charge a transaction fee and exchange fee, and your own bank may also charge a fee too. I’m not very good at carrying too much cash, so I’d rather pay the fees than risk losing my money.
Credit cards are mostly accepted in fancier stores, chain convenience stores (like 7-Eleven), hotels, fancy restaurants and shopping malls. Many places will charge a transaction fee of 2–5%, so cash is probably the smarter move. Make sure you have some small notes, like 20, 50, or 100 baht, as many local shops might not have change for larger bills like 500 or 1,000 baht.
Download Revolut or Wise!! You can exchange currency in real time and won’t have issues when trying to withdraw money from an ATM! I personally haven’t been to Thailand but I did Japan and Philippines and I was always able to take money with my Wise card as I don’t like to travel with cash.
While card is accepted almost everywhere - small local shops do not and it is always recommended to have some cash with you!
