Rome in 3 days: Vatican and Colosseum in the same day - too much?

Looking for advice from anyone who has done the Vatican and Colosseum in 1 day. I only have 3 days in Rime and there is so much to see and do, these two spots are my nust sees and if I can fit them into one day this would be ideal. Has anyone done this and can tell me how they found it? Was it too rushed? Which did you do first/last? Thank you in advance.

Hi Melissa, while I have not done these two spots in one day I think it is absolutely doable. I would start with the Vatican early in the morning, then you still have plenty of time in the afternoon to do the Colosseum. Just take local transport to get from one to the other to save some time. You will definitely spend more time in the Vatican. I think if you plan 1 hour at the Colosseum, that will be enough.

@melissa Yes, it’s definitely possible to do both in one day if your time in Rome is limited – you just need a good plan.

The most efficient way is to start early at the Vatican in the morning (ideally with a skip-the-line ticket). You can cover the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica in the first half of the day, then take a break for lunch.

In the afternoon, head to the Colosseum, ideally with a timed entry. Doing the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill later in the day works well, as the crowds are usually a bit lighter than in the morning.

It will be a full day, but not unreasonable, especially if these are your must-see sights. If you only have 3 days in Rome, this approach actually frees up another day to enjoy the city more slowly.
