Peak travel time in Rome

I really want to go to Rome and live out my movie dreams but all I see on TikTok is how busy it is. Do I really need to wake up at 4am to go to the Trevi fountrain to see it without crowds? Is there anytime in the year that I can go that will be a little less busy?

I personally went to Rome twice, and yes, it is busy and for a reason. Do not go in summer - it will be suuuuper crowded and way too hot to walk around. I believe Autumn is the best season to go - the temperatures are still mild and crowds are not so crazy. I’d recommend visiting the main attractions very early in the morning (I wouldn’t say 4:00 am but 7:00 is a good balance) and avoid weekends. If you plan to go to the Vatican (which you should) book your tickets in advance and pick an early time! Then use your afternoons for parks and food.

We stopped by Rome during Christmas time (26-28 Dec) and we had the best time. We knew it would be packed but honestly, it just added to the magic buzz and life of the city. Unless you are a content creator and need pics/videos with no one in the background, the main attractions will always be busy. We still managed to see Trevi Fountain twice and it was magical each time! You’ll forget the crowd when you see the fountain.

Book your tickets in advance for attractions like the Colosseum (our hotel sold tickets since we couldn’t find them online last minute). We also visited the free section of the Vatican, but waited in line for around 3 hours. There was a separate queue for ticket holders, but they still had to queue for some time so heads up for that.

Rome has become my favourite city but I agree with Mica on avoiding the summer season because of the heat!

I’ve been to Rome twice, once in June 2022 and again in June 2025. I definitely found it a lot busier in 2025, but it was still manageable. While you don’t have to get up at 4 am to go to the key spots (Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Pantheon, etc.) I would go first thing in the morning. We went at 7 am, and there were barely any people there, and this was still considered their “peak season.” Now, if you go there at noon, be prepared to feel like cattle! Try to get your typical “touristy” stuff out of the way in the morning, and then take the time to experience Rome as a local, slow down and get lost in the city!
