Only one day in Salzburg - will we regret it?

This trip is a 35th anniversary present to ourselves and Salzburg is the stop I’ve dreamed about since watching The Sound of Music as a kid. The tour we like only gives it one full day, and I keep going back and forth on whether that’s enough to enjoy it rather than rush it. For anyone who had just a day, did it feel worth it, or did you wish you’d had two?

Definitely think one full day can still be worth it. You should still be able to see the main city highlights like the Old Town, Hohensalzburg Fortress and Mirabell Gardens. If The Sound of Music is a big reason you want to go, I can totally see why one day might feel a little short if you also want to do a proper themed tour and not rush everything.

Since Salzburg is part of an organized tour, I’d definitely contact the tour operator and ask whether the itinerary is customizable. Even if it’s just one stop in the middle of the trip, they might be able to work something out for you, like an extra night or a slightly different arrangement. Always worth asking before ruling the tour out completely!

We only had one late evening arrival, a full day, and left the next morning. It was not enough, but I would have regretted missing it even for one day.

Indeed. One day is always better than no days.

Hi Jason! Salzburg is a beautiful city but as a tour guide myself, I think one night, even with the tour will be sufficient! The town itself is quite small and you’d be able to go and see everything after the tour with ease. Most people visit Salzburg with the main purpose to do the tour so you’ll hit it all on the head, it might just be a slightly rushed 24hrs.

I’d highly recommend going to Die Weisse for a really traditional meal and strudel dessert after the tour too!

Salzburgh is amazing, unique and totally worth visiting even for one day… I was sorry for Mozart moving from such a paradise to the austere, but socially important, Vienna. I would advise to wake up very early and go to bed late  as you’ll have lots to see/visit! I visited the entire city with a superb evening Mozart concert at the fortress, next day took the Sound of Music tour and other tours, and returned to Mondsee Lake and Cathedral (they filmed the wedding scene there) on my way back to Vienna (had my own car). You’ll need to jam it all in one day! A place where I will return anytime and perhaps live (in Mondsee particularly) in a future life :-)! Enjoy your trip!
