Nine nights across Bavaria and Austria

Planning for late May with my sister, both in our 60s, starting in Munich and ending in Vienna. We’d like a mix of castles, lakes and one or two cities without too many hotel changes. Is nine nights enough to do Bavaria and Austria justice, and which stops would you drop if it isn’t? Thanks in advance.

You’re in the right area for a mix of castles and lakes, that’s for sure.

Nine nights is enough; if you don’t try to cram too much in.

Late May is a great time to visit the region, before the tourist traffic jams strangle the lakeside roads.

The question is, how will you be travelling around; by bus, train or renting a car?

Perhaps you prefer an organised tour?

TourRadar list a ‘Germany and Austria in 8 days’ - Covering Munich, Innsbruck, Salzburg and Vienna.

Personally, adding Innsbruck seems a stop too far, but the old town is worth a visit.

Looking through the tours does give you some ideas of how to mix and match if you’re doing it all yourself.

Munich

Salzburg

Vienna

I’ve driven in the area plenty of times, and always find something new and interesting by following the ‘scenic routes’.

Top Tip: Stay open to discovery.

Nine nights is a good amount of time to explore Bavaria and Austria! You can spend a few nights in Munich, then head to Salzburg and finish in Vienna. Add a day trip to Hallstatt for beautiful lakes and mountain views without changing hotels too often.
