I’m not after a list of sights - I know about Schonbrunn, the Belvedere and the coffee houses. What I want to know is whether three days felt rushed or whether five felt too long. If you’ve done Vienna as part of a bigger Austria trip, how much time did you give it? Thanks.
I’d recommend four days in Vienna. Three days feel a little rushed if you want to enjoy the museums, coffee houses, and different neighbourhoods without hurrying.
Five days is the sweet spot if you want to enjoy the sights at a relaxed pace, linger over a coffee, and maybe spend a lazy afternoon readingor walking in one of the parks.
Three days is absolutely doable and you’ll cover the main highlights, but you’ll always feel like there’s something else to see just around the corner.
Also worth keeping in mind: a lot depends on when you visit. Vienna has so much to offer beyond the classic sights — Christmas markets in winter, swimming in the Danube in summer, hiking through the vineyards on the outskirts. Factor that in and you might find five days goes faster than you’d expect!
My wife and I went to Vienna some years ago, as part of a larger trip that included Salzburg. We had three days in Vienna, then three days in Salzburg, and returned to Vienna for another two days. Five days felt good, not rushed although, like anywhere else, there is always too much to see. Thay will always be the case, so I recommend five to seven days to really get a feel for the place, see a bunch of sights, live the experience instead of rushing to see what might be on your checklist. Once you start feeling a bit like a local, and get comfortable, you know you’ve been there the right amount of time. Then give yourself another day or two to actually live your dream trip.
We just spent a month in Italy, moving between five cities, and never felt rushed once. Although we really didn’t want to come back home afterwards… that’s the downside of living the experience.
Good luck.
Hi Erica, I live in Vienna, so I’m a bit biased ![]()
Three days works if you’re fine moving at a steady pace. Four is the comfortable number. Five isn’t too long, but only if you use one of those days for something outside the city, like the Wachau valley or Bratislava (about an hour by train). Without that, I’d stop at four.
One tip: plan fewer things per day than you think. Coffee houses and museums take longer than people expect, and that’s what makes three days feel rushed.
What else are you planning in Austria? That would change my answer.
We did 3 days, and while it was not rushed, there was so much more I wanted to see and do. It’s been my favorite city to visit, by far. Personally, I’d want 5 days if it were part of a bigger trip.
Pending on what your travel style is and what your interestes are (I really like getting to a different place every 4-6 days when I’m on the go and can only do so many museums - I think 3 days in Vienna is perfect. Any longer and I’d begin to look at day trips out of the city. Bratislava is a great close choice (1hr train) if you want do a day trip ![]()
