We’re doing a cruise that stops in Funchal for one day, but a few friends keep telling me Madeira deserves its own full week of hiking the levadas and seeing the north coast. Is the island really THAT different from mainland Portugal in terms of scenery? I’ve been to Lisbon and Porto and loved both. Trying to decide if I should just enjoy the day from the ship or plan a return trip for next spring specifically for Madeira. We’re in our early 40s, moderately active, not marathon hikers.

Madeira is indeed very different to mainland Portugal.
I’m sure you’ll have a great day on your Funchal port of call, but if you’re into hiking then making a return visit is worth considering; depending on where you’re from.
If you’re from the UK, yes; from the US, probably not.
My sister is off next week, for her third hiking trip; flying from the UK.
Where else is your cruise stopping?

I heard it needs a couple days to a week like Sicily vs. Italy.
@TravelNotes what is the best time to go there?
