Where to stay and eat in Madeira?

Any recommendations for where to stay and where/ what to eat in Madeira?

We stayed for 4 nights on 3 different hotels travelling the island clockwise. Starting with Funchal then headed west and stayed in Porto Moniz in Hotel Salgueiro which was very nice and cheap. For the last 2 nights we stayed in Machico in Dom Pedro Madeira, beach front and very good breakfast.
If you eat meat you can’t go wrong with a Espetada or a Picado. Also the the tuna steak with milho frito is super good

Thank you!

If you are renting a car you can access the whole island from pretty much anywhere. I split up my time between Funchal and then Porto Moniz as well. I would recommend doing something like this because it just cuts down on your driving time, plus getting out of Funchal allows you to be in a more relaxed environment!

I would recommend having one base for the accommodation. I preferred the north part of the island. Either Port Moniz or a smaller town close to Sao Vincente. I rented a car and an Airbnb and it was simply magnificent. Honestly, I would avoid Funchal but I just prefer being in smaller towns and close to nature hikes.

We based ourselves in Funchal and loved it - super convenient, great food options (especially for breakfast), easy to explore the rest of the island from there, and generally the best weather, particularly in the winter months.
