I’ve seen so many horror stories lately about Kyoto being completely overrun with tourists to the point where you can’t even walk down the street in Gion. We are going in November. If we wake up super early (like 6 AM) can we beat the crowds, or is it just packed from dawn till dusk now?

Yes it is super packed through the day and a lot of pushing and shoving. I did a evening walking tour of the Gion district starting around 7 pm, so was able to get pretty much empty streets and lovely glow from the street lamps. If you plan to be there super early at dawn, I think you should be able to beat some of the crowds. Although there a lot of folks getting photoshoots done in the morning.
