Japan in October: how is the fall foliage compared to cherry blossom season?

I’ve been going back and forth on when to take my first Japan trip. Everyone says cherry blossom season in March/April is the move, but I can only get time off in October and November.

Is Japan in October actually worth it for foliage? I’ve seen some incredible photos of red maples at temples in Kyoto but I’m worried it might be too early. Is late October or early November better? Also does October have the same crazy crowd problem as cherry blossom season or is it more manageable? Trying to decide between flying in October 15 or November 1.

Visiting Japan is not all about the foliage and blossom, surely.

I flew to Japan in early September, on the way to the Seoul Olympics and thoroughly enjoyed the temple experiences.

As for flying in October 15 or November 1, if your priority is Kyoto’s famous red maples, choose November 1. Kyoto and Tokyo typically peak mid–late November, and early November already has strong colour in nearby higher‑elevation areas like Nikko and Mt. Fuji’s Five Lakes.
