Hotels near Roma Termini: actually sketchy at night or just reputation?

Our flight from Newark lands at FCO around 10pm next month and by the time we Leonardo Express it into the city it’ll be near midnight. Hotels right by Termini are SO much cheaper than anywhere closer to the historic center and honestly I’d rather just crash for the night and move hotels the next day.

But every time I google it I see old Reddit threads saying the area is dodgy, full of pickpockets, dicey at night etc. Then other people say it’s fine, just a normal train station area. Which is it in 2026?

I’m traveling with my sister (we’re both early 30s) so not totally clueless but also not trying to walk through anything sketchy at midnight dragging suitcases. Is the block right behind Termini different from the block in front? Any specific streets to avoid? We were looking at something around Via Marsala / Via Marghera. Thanks!

Hi @daniela

I stayed at the Numa Barberini Hotel while I was in Rome. I found it to be easy to walk to and from at night. It is also not a far walk from Rome Termini.

It was a super modern and hip hotel with someone at the front desk to help out at any time.

Hope this helps!
