Living in a landlocked country in Europe I love to get away during the warmer months for a couple of weeks to do some remote working from a place with access to some sun and saltwater. Last year we went to the Black Sea coast in Bulgaria as well as Croatia. Does anyone have any other good suggestions?
When I was younger, I used to hitch-hike around Europe and head to the south of France.
In those days there wasn’t ‘remote working’ so we’d pick fruit on farms to make our money go further.
As you’ve already done Bulgaria and Croatia, am I to take it that France, Italy or Spain are not options?
Portugal is cheaper.
How about Albania and Montenegro, if you want to keep the Balkan/Adriatic vibe.
Greece even.
I guess it all depends on how much ‘working’ you want to do ‘remotely’ and how much sun and saltwater you want.
Nice tips - all options are on the table, although we angle towards the cheaper destinations as while we want to get away to the sea / ocean, we’ll still be working so you don’t want to spend too much money to work for the week!
I’m in Austria - so it’s really about places I can get to with direct flights.
My main requirement is that we can find an apartment on the beach because we need to work but it’s great to have a view of the water and to be able to dip in the ocean quickly before and after work to get that salt-water fix. Sounds like all of those options would work and many of them are pretty cheap (Portugal, Albania, Montenegro).
Thanks again!
If you’re looking for a warm escape with ocean access and good value, I’d really recommend Madeira. It’s called the Pearl of the Atlantic and it’s ideal for remote work. I worked remotely from there before and it was honestly a great setup. You can easily find an apartment with sea views, swim before/after work, and still have incredible nature and hikes for weekends.
Funchal is the best base (most amenities + reliable Wi-Fi), and if you want to be right by the water, areas like Lido / São Martinho are great because you’re close to the ocean and still have cafés and everything you need nearby.
Also, from Austria there are some direct options, otherwise it’s pretty easy via Lisbon.
