Weekend getaway ideas?

I have been on a roll with going to a new destination each month this year so far. But I would like some more recommendations for weekend getaways in Europea destination that is perfect for 3 days. For example, I went to Venice for a weekend recently, and that was perfect!

Any destinations you can suggest, and what to do there?

  • I am planning on going throughout the year, so there is no specific time tied to it.
  • I am open to city breaks or anything that is accessible by public transport.
  • Must be in the Schengen area.

So many to choose from.

Are you flying, using the train, or travelling by bus?

I love doing long weekends away, and being based in Switzerland we have so many options.

I prefer to drive and explore the countryside, rather than concentrate on City Breaks.

Do you have any particular interests?

Love this idea of a new destination every month :slightly_smiling_face:

A few great 3-day options I’ve really enjoyed:

  • Lisbon – perfect mix of viewpoints, food and day trips (Sintra/Cascais)

  • Budapest – great atmosphere, thermal baths and easy to explore on foot

  • Barcelona – beach + city combo, very easy for a weekend

  • Prague – compact, beautiful and very walkable

  • Naples – amazing food and you can add Pompeii or the Amalfi Coast

  • Seville – incredible architecture, tapas culture and such a warm vibe

  • Alicante – more relaxed, great for sun, sea and an easy coastal escape

All of these are easy without a car and work really well for a short trip. If you liked Venice, I think you’d especially enjoy Lisbon, Seville or Prague

If you are doing these through the train. There is an awesome site that lets you adjust how far you want to go and you could plan it that way.

Thanks for that. I’ve bookmarked the site to look at it more closely later.

Flying and train travel are on the table. :train: :airplane:

You mention Switzerland, any specific cities you would suggest for a long weekend?

I do like architecture and food as ways of exploring new destinations.

I didn’t really notice many crazy cool buildings but I definitely enjoyed all the castles and such in Interlaken.

I like being based in Switzerland for the many long weekend options we have, outside of the country.

Seriously, destinations in France, Germany, Austria, and Italy are all just a few hours away.

I also prefer driving as a way to see the countryside and villages, rather than weekend city breaks themselves.

@FatosPur makes some good ‘City Break’ suggestions, but as you’ve been to a few of those I’d just be stabbing in the dark with a list of cities.

Which ones in particular?

@MamaBearKay introduced us to a great website as well.

Did you say where you’re travelling from. @roann ?

How long would you be happy to sit on a train?

If you’re flying, the options are endless.

Dublin, Edinburgh, Madrid, Porto.

Now you’re spoilt for choice.

I visited Seville years ago and absolutely loved it! I’m actually thinking of going back with my husband in mid-May for our anniversary, so I’d love to refresh my plans — any recommendations for where to stay and what to do would be amazing :slightly_smiling_face:

Honestly, Europe has so many spots that fit perfectly into 2–3 days if you keep the itinerary light. If you are looking for the best sunset views and love beach nightlife vibes, then I think Santorini is one of the best places for you. You can easily explore it in around 3–4 days and still have a great experience without feeling rushed.

Bruge, Belgium is nice for a weekend getaway.

I love Seville. But Pamplona is also fun.
