I’m planning to drive the Garden Route from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth in February with a couple of friends. We’ll have about 6 days for the road trip. What were your favourite towns or stops along the way? Any places you wished you’d skipped or stayed longer?
Hi!
I did this tour Garden Route & Addo Group Adventure - 6 Days by Earthstompers Adventures with 123 Tour Reviews - TourRadar - that is also 6 days! I travelled with my partner and we joined a group - everything in the itinerary was amazing and the experience itself was one of a kind in only 6 days. You could take a look and find inspiration in the itinerary - but I’d also recommend you to book this - trust me you won’t regret it and it’s a small group tour that you will still be able to enjoy with your friends ![]()
@carol my suggestions would be:
-
Hermanus - great for a night and plenty of spots for good food and drinks. And depending on the season a place where you can do whale watching.
-
Robertson - a lovely stop for wine tasting!
-
Oudtshoorn - Would highly recommend you go see the Cango Caves and go to an ostrich farm if you have not seen them in person.
-
Tsitsikamma National Park - Natural raw coastal beauty that is a must to see.
-
Addo Elephant National Park - Seeing elephants is one of my all time favourite things from South Africa. There are other wildlife too.
@micatravels’s tour above also covers all the good locations!
For those who’ve done it before, is it better to start or end in Cape Town when planning a Garden Route trip? We’re also thinking of adding Kruger either before or after, so curious what order makes the most sense logistically.
@RichardRoams I would say end in Cape Town. That way you can fly out from Cape Town International with more flight options internationally. ![]()
