I stumbled on the paradores - old castles, convents and palaces turned into hotels - and now I’m a bit smitten with the idea of staying in one. I can’t tell whether tours actually use them or if it’s standard hotels throughout. Are they as special as they look, and worth choosing a trip around?
Yes! I stayed at the one in Santiago de Compostela. It depends of course on where it is. I love the Camino so the ones along the Camino were either palaces or monasteries. However, if you’re looking for a good monastery that’s got a similar feel but is cheaper, I’d recommend San Zoilo in Carrion de Los Condes. It’s still a fully operating Benedictine monastery. Luxury. Great food. And less than 100€ a night. I think there is a Franciscan monastery in Santo Domingo that is similar.
The food at the parador was great. I honestly would stay there again for my upcoming trip, but it’s more than I want to pay.
Again, there are other castles, monasteries and abbeys that also are luxury hotels hidden throughout Spain (and I’m sure other European countries — I stayed at one in France over 30 years ago). I think the Paradore brand is just becoming popular. I guess it’s what you want. San Zoilo blew me away and it was a nice surprise.
