Hi everyone, we are going to the Amalfi Coast in July (crazy, I know) and we definitely aren’t renting a car because the driving looks terrifying. Plan is to use the ferries and SITA buses. Be honest with me, how bad are the buses in high season? Are we going to be waiting hours for a bus that isn’t full? Just trying to mentally prepare or see if we need to budget for private drivers
Driving the Amalfi Coast is really not that bad.
We drove so didn’t have the hassle of sticking to timetables.
The SITA buses are definitely crowded in July, especially during popular times on the main routes like Amalfi to Positano or Amalfi to Sorrento.
The buses run regularly enough, roughly every 20-30 minutes on main routes, but during peak hours, buses fill up quickly.
You may have to wait for one or two buses before you can get on with a seat or even standing room.
Ferries are a great alternative and tend to be less affected by road traffic, offering scenic, faster travel between Positano and Salerno.
They also get busy, so probably best to book in advance or arrive early.
We visited Capri from Sorrento.
Ferries to Capri also depart from Positano, Amalfi, and Salerno during July.
Hope that helps.
I would look into a private car service if you are not wanting crowded buses. It was still quite crowded in September when I went a couple years back.
@debbie It’s definitely possible to visit the Amalfi Coast without a car.
Driving there can actually be quite stressful, especially in summer. The coastal roads are very narrow, traffic can be heavy, and parking is limited and expensive in many towns.
Many travelers use the SITA buses, although they can get quite crowded during high season. A good alternative is the ferry network between towns like Positano, Amalfi, and Capri. Ferries are often more comfortable and the views from the sea are beautiful.
A common approach is to combine ferries and buses, and if you want to make things easier for a day trip, hiring a private driver for one day can also be a good option.
So visiting the Amalfi Coast without a car is definitely doable, and for many travelers it’s actually the less stressful way to explore the area.
