I want to visit Romania next year as I have ancestry from there and always wanted to see what it was like. I really don’t know much about Romania or where is good to visit outside of Bucharest. I’m interested in local life and whats it’s really like to live there, as well as any good tourist spots for castles or history. I’ll travel during summer and I’m hoping to get some suggestions from anyone who has traveled there on some good places to visit and where I could base myself. Thank you!
My wife and I did a tour to the Transylvania region almost 20 years ago and absolutely loved it. I’m not sure how much it has changed in the meanwhile, but to our pleasant surprise there wasn’t a crazy amount of ‘Dracula’ stuff going on - just a focus on the rich heritage and beautiful castles and fortifications in places like Bran, Sighisoara, Sibiu, Brasov and more. Peles Castle still sits out in my mind as a stunning place to visit and we also managed to see a range of gorges, forests and other natural destinations in the region. Check it out, you won’t regret it.
Romania is one of those hidden gems in Europe everyone seems to overlook. I travelled to Romania and rented a car when I arrived in Bucharest. We first drove to the mountains to a town called Bușteni where we spent the night. It’s a great town to see local life, go on hikes in the mountains and see the nearby Peles Castle. From there, you can head on to Brasov and head to Bran Castle or as we like to say, Dracula’s Castle. From there, head on to Sibiu and take in the German and Romanian culture of the city. On the way back to Bucharest try to drive through one of the epic mountain passes. One of the famous ones is called Transfagarasan highway. There is also another road called Transalpina which is the highest road in the country with epic views!
