My girlfriend absolutely loves Christmas Markets and I would love to take her for a long weekend somewhere in Europe this season. We’ve already been to Edinburgh, London, Berlin and Paris over the last few years. I’m considering Salzburg and Vienna but is that easy enough to fit into a few days? It would be great to visit a couple of towns or cities if possible. Still open to suggestions or any better ideas
Germany is known for the best Christmas Markets in Europe and there are quite some tours to visit them in different cities! How many days do you have? Vienna’s ones are great too, including an ice skating field at the main one which I 100% recommend as I go every year.
If you are keen to visit both Austria and Germany, Munich has really beautiful markets and it is only 5 hours away from Vienna by bus/train.
In my opinion, the Schönbrunner Weihnachtsmarkt is the best Christmas market I’ve been to so far. They revamped it last year and now have even more fun attractions.
Another great place to visit is the one in the „Altes AKH“ or „Spittelberg“ area. They have a lot of organic food options.
You could easily visit about 4-5 Christmas markets in Vienna in a day. Each one is unique and has its own special charm.
I also like the one at Karlsplatz in Vienna as it isn’t that crowded like some others and standing in front of the big church with the christmas lights is really nice
I highly recommend checking out the Christmas markets in Salzburg. Living in Vienna, I have been to many different ones in the city and can say that the ones I have been to in Salzburg blew the ones in Vienna away. They are bigger, better and just magical!
If you would like to see authentic Christmas markets, i recommend the Strasbourg one. Its one of the biggest in Europe. I highly recommend you do it while on a river cruise instead of a land journey. Its the best.
You get front row seats to the sights and sounds that those little villages and shires have to offer along the river bank and at the same time get access to the important sites further inland.
I have only been to the one in Milan. The Christmas Trees were absolutely stunning. Pretty much every Italian designer had a Christmas tree decorated and there were multiple trees like that. It’s located right outside the Duomo in Milan. You won’t miss it.
I also heard that the best Christmas Markets are located in the German speaking cities in Europe so check out Vienna, Munich, Berlin.
I would highly recommend going to Vienna, Austria for Christmas Markets.
In one week you can go to a different one each day!
My favourite ones during the season are:
Or have a look on TourRadar, they have so many options for multiple Christmas Markets in multiple cities in one trip.
