Vegan food in Egypt?

Does anyone know much about the availability of vegan food in Egypt?

I always use Happy Cow when I travel which has helped me so much in so many places, but there doesn’t seem to be much listed in Egypt.

I’m planning to travel to Cairo/Giza, Luxor, Aswan and Hurghada. I’m not expecting there to be a huge amount of options, but maybe some Egyptian dishes that are naturally vegan? (I would love to taste some local food!) Or any recommendations of places you might have tried or seen?

This is probably why I haven’t found anything on happy cow  Thanks @traveler_1166369 - it’s good to know, I’ll have to hunt down some rice and chickpeas!

Have you spent much time in Egypt? I’m not sure what to expect in terms of shops/markets, but did you find you could pick up veggie snacks quite easily in different locations?

I am not vegan myself but I recently went to Hurgada and there was so much variety of food! Lots of eggplant dishes for example and the falafel were the best ones I ever tried! Pasta, rice, salads & potato dishes are also available. You kinda have to hunt for it and you might need to guess if its vegan or vegetarian but I am confident you will find great options!

Thank you @micatravels, good to know there were a few things in Hurghada!

I’m back from Egypt so wanted to give some info on this post!

Overall, while it was challenging in some parts, we found lots of options too!

Falafel, Foul (warm bean dip) and Egyptian bread were a staple for breakfast which was great, so the hotel in Giza and Dahab gave us this each day so it was a good start.

As I took 2 tours, I didn’t have much chance to eat out at authentic Egyptian places, I had Koshary (pasts, rice, lentils, chickpeas and tomato sauce) one night, which was mediocre (but i think it was just that restaurant). But you have lots of ‘tourist buffets’, where there was always rice and salad, sometimes some veg or chickpeas - which was fine, but it was a bit of a guessing game as to what was on salads etc.

In Dahab, there was an all vegan place - The Vegan Lab - which had western style vegan food (burritos, salad bowls, cookies etc) - which was very good - but also European prices. And El Dorados on the beach near Coral Cove - which had vegan pizzas! It was nice to have something at the end of my trip, but would have been happy to try some more Egyptian fare along the way.

Breakfast. -excellent
Lunch - a bit limiting
Dinner - really depends on where you were.

I also found several snacks in the roadside shops, like biscuits and chips (not the healthiest - but kept us going!)

@ck_explorer1000 I’m not vegan, but I was pleasantly surprised by how many naturally vegan options there are in Egypt.

A lot of traditional Egyptian food is actually plant-based by default. Dishes like koshari (rice, lentils, pasta, chickpeas with tomato sauce), falafel (often made with fava beans in Egypt), ful medames (slow-cooked fava beans), lentil soup, baba ghanoush, tahini salads and plenty of mezze-style vegetable dishes are widely available.

In Cairo and larger tourist areas you’ll find more variety, but even in Luxor and Aswan I saw plenty of simple vegan-friendly local options. You may not find many fully “vegan-labelled” restaurants on Happy Cow, but local Egyptian eateries naturally offer a lot of plant-based dishes.

I’d just recommend clearly saying “no meat, no chicken, no fish, no dairy” when ordering, just to be safe.

Overall, I think you’ll manage much more easily than you expect

Definitely some vegan foods like Ful, Koshary, Ta’ameya (their version of falafel), Baba Ghanoush, Moussaka (I forgot how it’s called in Egypt this was the name in Greece) it’s like eggplant and tomato sauce with peppers and onions). I lean vegetarian and these were some of my main dishes I ate.
