Trip to Yukon Canada

Winter Roads, Bison, Yukon.

Start

Dawson Creek

I left Dawson Creek in winter.

Snow covered sections of road.

Visibility changed by day.

Some days:

  • Snow wall ahead

  • Headlights stayed on

  • Speed stayed low

Other days:

  • Open sky

  • Wide land

  • Time to look around

Driving taught focus.

Mistakes carry cost.

Alberta

Highway 16

I crossed into Alberta.

I followed Highway 16.

Traffic thinned fast.

What mattered:

  • Distance between vehicles

  • Fuel checks

  • Rest stops

The drive demanded attention.

Fatigue showed early.

Prince George

Prince George marked a pause.

Fuel. Food. Tire check.

Then north again.

Smithers

Highway 37A North

Past Smithers, services dropped.

The road felt remote.

Snow shifted without warning.

I planned each stop.

I watched the sky.

I watched the road.

Wildlife on the Highway

Bison appeared often.

Groups stood on the highway.

Some crossed without pause.

What I did:

  • Slowed early

  • Stayed back

  • Waited them out

They owned the road.

Patience kept things safe.

Yukon

Whitehorse

I crossed into Yukon.

I went to Whitehorse.

Work set the route.

The land stayed open.

Towns stayed spaced out.

The road stayed honest.

Drove to Faro and back to Dawson Creek 3 times.

Takeaway

Winter driving strips comfort.

Preparation decides outcomes.

Attention keeps you moving.

You respect wildlife.

You respect distance.

You respect the road.

A dream trip for me! I grew up in BC, Canada but never made it up to the Yukon. Definitely one day!
