Planning 2 weeks in summer 2027 with my husband and it’s a toss up. We both love mountains and food, so this should be easy but it’s not.
Everyone keeps telling me Switzerland will “destroy the budget.” Like how destroyed are we talking? We have around $6k for the 2 weeks excluding flights. Is that laughable in Switzerland but fine in Italy?
If I did Switzerland, I’d do Lucerne + Interlaken + Zermatt. If Italy, probably Rome + Florence + Dolomites so I still get mountains.
Anyone done both, does Switzerland actually feel worth the extra cost or do you leave feeling like you got robbed by a bowl of rösti? lol.
Both places are amazing- lots of see, lots to do- great memories to make.
But I spent more on a weekend in Switzerland than I did in 3 weeks in Italy. It honestly floored me how even basic food is extremely expensive.
Your budget would stretch WAY more in Italy, and probably give you the buffer to treat yourself! I definitely didn’t feel like I got “robbed” in Switzerland, but I do firmly believe it is not worth the fortune it costs to visit.

You would definitely take more advantage by going to Italy instead. Rome + Florence + Dolomites gives you food, history, cities, mountains, and more room for little treats. I think Switzerland is worth it most when you’re okay paying extra for nature, trains, views, and very smooth logistics, not necessarily for food or value. Maybe something like Northern Italy/Dolomites plus maybe a scenic train moment? The Bernina Express is a great compromise for a day trip if you want to experience a little of Switzerland without making the whole trip Swiss-priced.
