Sweden in winter: Is Stockholm too dark/depressing in January?

Im consdiering a quick city break to Stockholm in January as there are some great flights deals from UK. I know it’s quite depressing here in January, but maybe the Swedes have a better time in Winter, I know it will get dark early, but is it depressing there in winter? Will it be too cold to go out? And are people generally still out and about and activities happenning or am I better waiting for another time?

My girlfriend and I had a lovely time in Stockholm in late December a few years ago.

The historic part of Gamla Stan is absolutely magical by day or by night. I recommend staying there cus you’ll be surrounded by cute shops and cozy restaurants and bars.

Sadly, Xmas markets close end of Jan - but fret not, there is still plenty of stuff to do!

if you’re an ABBA fan (who isn’t), do hit up the ABBA Museum. You can get there by boat from Gamla Stan (it’s part of the public transport!).

Another must is Skansen, the open air museum with wooden houses and a Nordic animal zoo.

I recommend exploring the sights during the day and then enjoying a hearty meal and hitting the pubs when it gets dark out. We stumbled into some rustic pubs in Gamla Stan where they had live music and just great vibes.

The cold itself isn’t the issue, it’s the wind. So do layer up. But days can be sunny (or maybe you’ll have luck and get some snow).

Hope this helps!
