I’m going to Indonesia in January (I know it is wet season!), and will have 1 week in Bali before flying to Flores. My number one reason for visiting is to see Komodo dragons - a dream of mine. Right now, I’m planning to be in Flores for 3 nights - so 2 full days. There are 1 day boat trips to Komodo Island, where you also go to Padar Island and get the chane to snorkel with Manta Rays (which is also a must!), but I’m worried due to wet season it might be a bit risky. I’ve heard you can stay on Komodo Island too, and not sure if this is a better option. Has anyone been there in January and had any issues with the weather? And does anyone know about staying on Komodo Island and what that’s like vs a day trip?
I went there in January, and the weather was beautiful with calm seas! I took a day trip from Flores and saw the amazing Komodos. I had the exact same worry as you - so I booked one extra night on Flores to account for any bad weather. I really liked it there, very relaxed vibe and very different from Bali!
But I do have a friend who also went in January, they did make it to the Komodo national park, but they could go to Padar Island (the insta hotspot) because of bad weather, so it could be hot or miss.
I recommend spending an extra day if you can, or at least planning to see them on day 1, so day 2 is a back up option.
The Komodos are definitely worth seeing though, it’s pretty wild how big some of them are (and a little scary!). The trip I went on also included snorkelling with Manta Rays - one of the best things ever. The boat stops in an area they are known to visit and when they spot one they shout ‘jump now’ and you just jump straight in and follow them - magical!
