First time in NYC this year, going with my husband but only for 4 days and have so much planned already! Of course it would be so cool to see the Statue of Liberty, but not sure if it is worth it to visit the island as I’ve seen you can just get a free ferry to Staten Island and go past it to get a view. I also saw you can get tickets into the crown now! For those who have been, was it worth going to the island and even inside the crown? Or do you think seeing it from the ferry was also a good enough experience. There is so much I want to do that Im not sure if it is worth the time and money!
Hi @tiffany - I’ve been a budget traveller most of my life, and there are some things that can’t alone be judged on cost.
True, entry to ‘tourist attractions’ have become something a marketing cash cow but setting foot on the Liberty Island itself is something I’m glad I did.
I enjoy walking around and taking the time to find the right picture instead of a quick sail by ‘snap and grab’, insta shot.
Tickets to climb into the crown are limited and often need to be booked months in advance.
@tiffany I visited years ago and personally, I think going to the island is worth it — especially if you’re interested in the history behind it.
For me, the most meaningful part wasn’t just seeing the Statue up close, but visiting the museum and understanding the immigrant stories connected to it. It really adds depth to the experience and makes it more than just a photo stop.
If you’re short on time and just want the view, the ferry is fine. But if you want to understand what the Statue of Liberty truly represents, I’d recommend visiting the island and the museum.
Wish I could of gone inside (still can
) when I went. My first visit was February 2002 so nothing was open really and things were starting to rebuild after 9/11. I have heard it’s so full of history.
Hi @tiffany
I went to New York in 2019, and I bought this New York Pass.

Included in this pass were plenty of museums and attractions. A ferry to the island is included in this pass. I think it is worth visiting! You also get a great view of Manhattan from the island. The statue is also smaller than I thought, so seeing her up close gives a better impression. ![]()
Absolatley! Immigration museum is fantastic. If you wonder about history, you should visit it ![]()
