Lost baggage on a group trip

Has anyone ever flown to a destination to join a group trip, but realised the airline lost your luggage? Most tours depart the city they start in the following day, so I’m always curious to know how the airline gets your luggage back to you if you’re moving around a lot.

Have a few trips planned at the end of the year and have paid extra for luggage as I’ll be jumping between climates (going from warm-ish Morocco to freezing northern Europe), but I’m so nervous about losing my luggage when I’ll be bopping around the place.

An airline has lost my luggage a few times. The first time was only for a couple of days and luckily I was still in the same city. The other time we did go to another city in the same country. They’ll give you a number you can call to get updates on where your luggage is. They’ll also give you an estimate for when they’ll get you your luggage and they’ll then fly it to the closest airport to you at the time. That can be easier said than done though and is a lot harder when you’re bouncing around a lot.

I’ve since learned from my mistakes and if I am ever travelling with someone, I’ll always split our clothes between both of luggages so if one gets lost we still have clothes we can wear!

I haven’t lost my bag (yet) but I would recommend insurance for this! Someone on my group had their airline lose their luggage and because we were on a tour we were already leaving the next day to the next destination. Her insurance covered her to buy new clothes and supplies (within reason of course) and really took the stress out of the situation.

While it is a very annoying scenario, I think it comes in handy when you actually travel in a group. The tour company and guides could potentially become very useful and might have dealt with similar scenarios before. If you get picked up by the company from the airport, just ask and see what they recommend to do.

I always travel with a few essentials in my carry-on just in case my luggage gets lost; few T-shirts, underwear and socks.
