Joshua Tree vs Death Valley: which desert park for a first timer?

Got 2 spare days at the end of a California road trip and I want to squeeze in one desert park. Never done either. Joshua Tree looks more photogenic and Instagram-y but Death Valley sounds more dramatic and unique.

Which one is better for someone who’s never been to the desert before? We’ll be there in late November so hopefully not too hot. We’re not hardcore hikers but we’d do a moderate trail. Also, can you camp at either without a reservation or is everything booked?
