Hawaii island hopping: worth the hassle for 10 days, or just pick one?

We have 10 days for Hawaii in November and I keep going back and forth. Originally planned Maui + Big Island (5 nights each) but the inter-island flights, rental cars at both, and checking out/in to new hotels is starting to feel like a lot of logistics for what’s supposed to be a relaxing vacation.

Would we be happier just doing 10 days on Maui and actually relaxing? Or is the Big Island different enough that it’s worth the travel day in the middle? We want beaches, snorkeling, maybe one good hike, and a lot of doing absolutely nothing. This is a recovery trip, not an adventure trip.

If you just want to relax then I would just stay on Maui.I wouldn’t even rent a car for the whole time if you intend to stay in Waikiki and rent only as needed. Certainly check your accommodation for parking availability and costs prior to renting. You can do a circle island drive in a day (or tour), and a hike at Diamond Head -just catch a bus or taxi/uber. There’s plenty of shopping, beaches and eating out, snorkelling and plenty of touristy things to do if you want to.

If you do decide on another island I suggest going straight there as a connecting flight if possible to cut down on the amount of time driving to and from the airport. If you do the first 5 days in Maui and then go to the other island you might have to be back in Maui the day before your flight home depending on your flight schedules It could end up being far from relaxing.
