What is the best time to visit Iceland to see Northern Lights? I am planning to go for a week. Also, what is the weather like? Would you provide a list of things that need to be packed? I would also like to visit Blue Lagoon but I am not sure if it is open
To see the Northern Lights, Fall-Spring is the best. To avoid the super cold weather, maybe try September! It’s the start of Northern Lights season, you will still get the chance of less extremely cold weather, and the pricing is good! Plus the Blue Lagoon is open during that time, and I hear there are less tourists.
Definitely pack warm clothes, including layers and sturdy hiking shoes that provide insulation for your feet. And a good camera to capture the amazing sights!
Late September to late March is the window to see the Northern Lights. I went in February and it really wasn’t that cold with an average temperature of 0-3°C. I’m also used to Canadian winters, so I might have a different barometer when it comes to the cold lol. Also, I think the Blue Lagoon is open pretty much year-round, so you should be good whenever you go. Protip: take a look at the Sky Lagoon instead. I liked it a lot better!
Just remember - the darker it is - the more likely you are to see the lights - and winter has a lot less daylight hours.
I’m also thinking of going, but would definitely take a tour and not drive if it was in winter!
