Can anyone tell me where is best to see the Northern Lights in either Norway or Iceland? I’m thinking of a winter trip and I’m desperate to see the aurora. Bonus points if it’s easy to get to from the city, as my daughter suffers with car sickness on really bendy roads. I’ve heard the more remote roads in Norway can be quite hardcore.
Hi @jessica
I was chatting to another traveller about this. I travelled to Iceland in early April to see the Northern Lights on this tour: Land of the Northern Lights - 5 days by On The Go Tours with 176 Tour Reviews (Code: LOTNL) - TourRadar
On this 5-day trip, I was fortunate to have seen them 3 times over three nights. I have not seen the Northern Lights in Norway, but Iceland gets my vote. As for getting there, we travelled by bus from Reykjavik to a small town away from the city lights to see them better. The road was relatively flat and not bendy. ![]()
Commenting so I can follow this thread - I’m leaning towards Iceland myself but open to either!
Hey @jessica If you go to the veeeery North of Norway you are almost guaranteed to see the Aurora as there is a pretty constant display and clearer skies, but the roads are quite narrow and windy so you would need to fly directly there.
Iceland will still give you a good chance though, and generally the roads are a bit more chill. I also feel like there is more to do and see there so unless the Northern Lights are all you want to see, then I’d go with Iceland.
I’ve never been to Norway but I loved Iceland in the winter and I couldn’t recommend it more. I would also consider doing a specific Northern Lights Tour to give you a better chance in catching them!
