Best Edinburgh hotels in the Old Town (haunted options welcome)

I’m obsessed with the spooky history of Edinburgh and really want to stay in the Old Town to be close to everything. Can anyone recommend a hotel that has that old, historic, maybe slightly creepy vibe? I’d love to hear if anyone has stayed somewhere “haunted” or just really atmospheric. But obviously still want it to be clean and have hot water!

Also if anyone here has any suggestions of guided “creepy” guided adventures, please link them. We’d like to go to as many as we can during our trip, but we haven’t found that many sadly

Hi @anthony! while I lived in Edinburgh for a couple of years, I never stayed in any “haunted” hotels. Asked my friends if they can recommend a specific one, and the only name that keeps poping up is the Scotsman Hotel (probably because it’s the most famous one).

maybe this list helps: Top haunted hotels in Edinburgh - Forever Edinburgh

Regarding the “adventures”, I only know of this bus Edinburgh Ghost Bus Tour | A Dark Ride Through Scotland’s Capital | The Ghost Bus Tours

Have fun in Edinburgh! It’s probably my favorite place on earth

Hey @anthony , Edinburgh is one of my wife’s and my favourite places. We didn’t stay right in the Old Town, but we stayed at Carberry Tower Mansion House just outside the city, and it was an amazing (and slightly spooky) experience.

At night, you could hear the floors and walls creaking, which definitely added to the atmosphere - in a good way. It felt very old and full of character, but still comfortable. We loved it.

The history of the place makes it even more interesting. Parts of the building date back to around 1500, and the estate is where Mary, Queen of Scots surrendered in 1567. There’s even a monument on the grounds marking the spot. Jacobite troops also passed through the estate in 1745 on their way to Prestonpans.

Later on, it became connected to the royal family, Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret stayed there as children, and there’s still a room called The Queen’s Room because of that.

It’s not exactly Old Town, but if you’re open to staying just outside the city and want somewhere with real history and a slightly eerie feel at night, it’s definitely worth a look.
