Hi there!
I just booked a flight from JFK to Split with a layover in Vienna, and I just realized the connection time is only 45 minutes! Austrian Airlines sold me the ticket as a single booking so I assume they think it’s possible, but now I’m panic reading reviews about passport control lines. Has anyone done a connection this short in Vienna recently? Do I have to change terminals or go through security again? I’m worried about my checked bag making it even if I run.
Hi @liam, nice choice going to Split!
So 45 minutes should be just enough for a layover at Vienna airport. It’s fairly compact. I’ve not had a layover there, but I have flown from and to Vienna a lot.
Of course, it depends on whether your flight from JFK to Vienna is on time. Maybe consider paying a bit extra for a seat closer to the door? Ask the staff for flight updates during your flight. That should put you at ease.
According to Viennaairport - Transfer –> since you’re flying into Vienna (Schengen area) and continuing to Croatia (also Schengen), you shouldn’t have to go through passport control - only security.
I’m not sure about the terminals - but since you’ve booked it as a single ticket, Austrian Airlines should ensure it’s possible.
Your checked bag will be automatically transferred to the Vienna-Split flight.
Pls don’t take my word for it, though. If you feel unsure about anything specific, confirm with Austrian Airlines ![]()
The problem is, @liam is flying from outside Schengen (JFK).
Airport of departure outside the Schengen area, but airport of destination within the Schengen area
Passport control is required

good point - sorry!
