Whats the monsoon season in India like?

Planning to visit India on my two weeks break next year. Of course it is a big country and it is not possible to see everything in such a short period. Please recommend me some must see spots? Should i explore the North or South of India? I hear our summers in Canada , is the monsoon there. Would that ruin my trip?

I went to India during Monsoon season (September) and there were some big downfalls but it didn’t impact my enjoyment, actually there were a couple of epic moments due to it! I think peak monsoon season in July and August, so perhaps you could avoid those months. I also think different areas get impacted more than others, around the north near Delhi isn’t as bad as some more southern areas, so maybe you could bear that in mind and stick to that Northern region.

  1. I went to monsoon palace in Udaipur - spectacular view of the mountains from there, and could see a monsoon rolling which was amazing. Once it hit us, there was a huge downpour and the palace got a little flooded, we got stuck there until a car could come and pick us up. It sounds bad, but this was something I have remembered for years and was absolutely awesome getting stuck at Monsoon palace due to a monsoon!

  2. I went out in the desert from Jaisalmer to camp under the stars, but it rained for the one time of the year! The porter had to go all the way back and find a tent which is very rarely used (and you could tell!)

No matter when you travel, I’m sure you’ll make some epic memories in India, its a special place. I’ve been twice, once the to Golden Triangle and Rajasthan, and once to Kolkata and surrounds.

I recommend seeing the Taj Mahal, which maybe you already have in mind, but this went way beyond my expectations. Udaipur for me was one of my favourite spots too, as well as Jaisalmer which was a bit further out.

New Delhi is a lot, very hectic but wow, an experience! Personally I would not plan too much time there. To make the most of your 2 weeks I recommend staying up North for milder monsoons and the most iconic sites. I would also look at booking a tour as a first time visitor, they will have itineraries that take you to the best spots to explore and I think in India it would be especially beneficial to have local guides and a planned itinerary as trying to get/book/take trains and buses can be time consuming!
