Finally booked my trip to Peru for October and now I am starting to pack and need help in what I should pack as there will be sightseeing, trekking, warm weather, cold weather.. and I am a bit lost in what I should bring. I do not want to overpack as I travel with a backpack. Has anyone been and can help me out? Thanks in advance already!!
You will definitely want to pack layers… I did a lot of hiking around Huaraz and the Salkantay Trek, and layers are key! I also had just a 40L backpack, and it’s definitely doable ![]()
If you have a compact down-type of jacket, that would be good? I got one from Uniqlo and it was great. You will also need a rain jacket, of course, which can double as a windbreaker lol. Peru also has tons of alpaca clothing items which are warm, I bought some cheap gloves and a hat in Cusco and it was super handy as well!
Are you an experience hiker? I am not a fan of it but I want to book an Inca Trail trip as well - wondering if you could maybe share the trip you booked so I can have a look?
appreciate it!
agree that layers are key. While I didnt do Peru yet I hiked Kilimanjaro 2 years ago and the weather that high up is unpredictable at times so be prepared for it all. And there are plenty of options of gear that double down for rain/wind/heat etc. Invest in a few good (maybe a bit more expensive) items, it is worth it.
I hiked the Inca Trail in late October - and while the weather was nice for the most part there were some intense downpours as its the start of the wetter months.
Unfortunately I was not prepared and bought a waterproof poncho locally which did not cut it! So I recommend a lightweight, fully waterproof jacket (as humidity levels could be quite high and it was pretty warm during the day when I was there), waterproof hiking boots/shoes. I would even go as far as the rollaway waterproof pants too.
My favourite thing to travel with is a puffer jacket that folds into its own pocket - and also waterproof as it takes up so little room and will cover most colder areas if you have extra layers to wear, and if camping at night while trekking - like this one.
As others have said - layers are always key when packing for different climates!
