I went to Peru a few years ago and really loved it! What I liked most about it was the diverse nature - we went from city to desert to 5000m altitude within a few days, absolutely fascinating. Also the people and food are just lovely, can only recommend
Lisa that sounds amazing! Thank you so much for these inspiring words!
Hey Christina, I agree with Lisa. While Macchu Picchu is of course breathtaking and def. a must see for everyone visiting Peru, the country is so diverse and there are plenty of reasons to visit. During my trip in 2018, I also loved the historic centers of Cusco and Arequipa & hiking in the Andean mountains (and in breathtaking heights!). People are extremely warm and happy to share their stories. And I wasn’t even able to see the Amazon Rainforest or beaches on the Pacific coast
Thank you Anna for sharing your experience Your experience was very helpful. You made me wanna visit Peru soon enough
PERU! From the high Andes to the dense rainforest, from the peaceful shores of Lake Titicaca to the white sand beaches along the Pacific coast, the landscapes in Peru are as diverse as the experiences you can have there. A high altitude recommendation: once you’ve done Machu Picchu and Cusco, you can spend even more time in the Urubamba Valley exploring incredible ruins and the fascinating Indigenous communities that have been in these hills for centuries. And a low altitude recommendation: go to Lima and eat. It’s a hugely underrated culinary hub, and growing as a must-see cosmopolitan metropolis in Latin America.
Peru is such an amazing destination but is seriously a foodie’s paradise as you are spoiled with choice! So many incredible options! I honestly didn’t know there were so many types of potatoes! Also, you are very spoiled if you love hiking as there are so many hikes in the Andes! Specifically if you want to visit Machu Picchu! Why take the train from Cusco when you can hike it?!
I really loved Huaraz, if you like to hike…the Santa Cruz Trek in particular was incredible! Also Laguna 69 is a really popular day trip, also breathtaking.
The sand oasis in Huacachina is also just as cool as it looks online
if you 1-2 days is enough there though!
Top 3 highlights for me:
- Lake Titicaca (Puno) - and Isla del sol out on the lake - stunning, it’s a very special place!
- Inca trail to Machu Picchu (of course) but also loved Cusco, some great food there!
- Nasca lines - mysterious ancient geoglyphs in southern Peru - you can really only see them by going up in a small plane to see the full picture of the massive designs and I have never seen anything like it!
One place not yet mentioned that blew me away was Colca Canyon. Jaw dropping in itself, but throw in some incredible fauna and flora (e.g. condors) and nearby thermal pools and it was a real highlight for me.
Also, the macabre, mysterious Chauchilla Cemetery in the middle of nowhere, near Nazca is well worth a detour.
