I heard Iceland has become a bit more popular during the summertime over the years. What would be some of the highlights to do in summer that cannot be explored during wintertime? Also, should I choose a local tour operator in Iceland or maybe a brand like Intrepid or G Adventures?
Wearing shorts is for sure something you can’t do in the Winter!
I loved the journey I took in Iceland during the Winter of 2023 and am planning to go back in the Summertime of 2027 to be able to enjoy a bit more the time at the waterfalls and get the different green vistas more-so than during Winter. Most of the activities seem to run year-round, but things like the Icelandic Horse show, experiencing the waterfalls and hiking trails etc weren’t optimal due to the ice on the ground in Winter and the general desire to get out of the freezing rain at times!
It was for sure great / unique to see such a huge expanse of territory purely covered in snow and ice, but as a keen hiker and camper there is for sure some things there I want to experience in the Summer.
With regards to the tour operators - many of the big operators you mentioned would work with a local provider in terms of the services they provide, so you’ll find the quality to be similar. We went with a local operator (GJ Travel) on this tour - 8 Days Guided Iceland Circle by GJ Travel with 41 Tour Reviews (Code: GJ-92) - TourRadar - and it was fantastic. Many of the people on it had booked through some other ‘bigger companies’ (not Intrepid or G Adventures - they would have their own designated tours) - so GJ Travel brought together travellers from a number of different companies on the same tour. It wasn’t a problem at all - just meant that we had a nice group size instead of being on our own.
