Greece island hopping: Which islands are best for avoiding the party crowds?

Hi everyone, I’m planning a trip to Greece for June next year with my partner, we’re in our late 30’s and want to avoid the party crowds. We have 2 weeks in total and would like to check out maybe 3-4 islands. We love the idea of relaxing on the beach, Greek village life, authentic taverans and maybe some history too.

Can anyone recommended the best islands for us? We’ll likely fly into Athens and get a ferry from there and between other islands, so accessability is a factor as well. We like more off the beaten path and low key than fancy resorts. Thank you!

Hi @zoe, I love the Sporades Islands. It’s a group of three, Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos.

These are the islands that became famous because of Mamma Mia because they were filmed there. These are small islands and small towns. Amazing food and amazing beaches. I would highly recommend. I go back every other year. I found a few trips here on TourRadar but assume they can make some custom trip recommendations as well:

@zoe How about…

Hydra, a charming, car-free island with beautiful stone mansions, cobblestone streets, and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s close to Athens (under two hours by ferry from Piraeus), making it a perfect first stop.

Highlights include a quaint harbour, traditional tavernas, seaside walks, and some small beaches. No cars means it’s very tranquil.

Naxos, the largest island in the Cyclades, offers beautiful beaches, traditional villages, and ancient ruins like the Portara (Temple of Apollo).

It’s larger and less touristy than Mykonos or Santorini, but still accessible by ferry from Hydra.

Amorgos, known for its dramatic landscapes and peaceful atmosphere, is ideal for hiking and quiet beaches; reachable by ferry from Naxos.

Visit the stunning Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa clinging to cliffs, and traditional villages like Chora with narrow alleys.

You could then include Paros or Milos.

Paros - Slightly livelier but still charming with traditional villages like Lefkes.

Good for beaches and tavernas, and easy ferry connections to Naxos and Amorgos.

Milos - Known for unique volcanic beaches and dramatic coastline, more rugged and less touristy than Santorini.

Return to Athens from Paros, Milos, or Naxos for your flight home.

@zoe Hi Zoe,
That sounds like a lovely plan :blush: June is a great time for Greece, especially if you want to avoid the party scene.

Based on what you’re looking for, I’d suggest focusing on quieter island groups rather than the big party names.

From Athens, the Cyclades still work well if you choose the right islands.

  • Paros (especially villages like Lefkes) for beaches, local life and great tavernas

  • Naxos for a mix of history, authentic villages and long, relaxed beaches

If you want something even more low-key, the Small Cyclades are wonderful:

  • Koufonisia for slow days, swimming and simple village life

  • Amorgos for dramatic landscapes, hiking and a very authentic feel

Another great option is the Saronic Islands, which are very easy from Athens:

  • Hydra (no cars, very peaceful, beautiful walks)

  • Poros or Aegina for local tavernas and relaxed evenings

With two weeks, 3–4 islands is perfect and keeps travel stress low. Ferries between these islands are straightforward, especially in June before peak summer crowds.

Hope this helps – Greece is amazing when you experience it this way :herb:
