Escaping Winter in Canada

I live in Toronto and want to leave the country the moment it turns cold. I’m looking for someplace warm in January or February. I want to keep my flight relatively short (no more than 6 hours from Toronto). I have already gone to a lot of places in the Caribbean and have done a lot of “fly and flop” trips. This time around, I’m looking for some adventure and was considering Central or South America. Any good recommendations?

I’m also in Toronto…we all want to escape winter :joy: hmm maybe depends on how much time you have or if you want to relax, or want more adventure?

I went to Guatemala in February, and it’s absolutely incredible. You can relax on Lake Atitlan and enojoy some volcano views, or hike Acatenango if you’re up for an overnight adventure as well!

Also…Mexico, of course! I also spent a week in Tulum during winter which was a nice quick and relaxing escape  or you could go to Mexico City for some good food and culture.

I have not been, but have heard amazing things about Puerto Escondido as well! Great beaches and food, and you could add on Oaxaca as well.

Costa Rica is a great option too! Also if you can wok remote it has a great expat community and a lot of co-working spaces in the tourist hot spots. You can extend your stay even longer maybe go for all of January and February? lol

Guatemala looks amazing! Is it a place you can do independently or would you recommend a tour?

Also I love Mexico but I’ve only done all-inclusives (and day tours), it would be cool to do explore the country a bit more!

I’ve been to Costa Rica once, but only stayed in San José. It looks great, but it does seem pretty pricy for how weak the Canadian dollar is :skull:

I personally did Guatemala independently - staying at hostels with a friend. I liked it a lot, but if you are solo, there are also plenty of group tours you could do as well? 10 Best Guatemala Tours & Trips 2025/2026 - TourRadar

Yeah, a lot of people tend to stick to all-inclusives in Mexico…but TRUST ME, the country is incredible if you get off of the resorts!

Costa Rica would be the place to go if you are looking for an active holiday. If you are looking for an all inclusive resort relaxing holiday, I would recommend Mexico!

Mexico would be a nice quick break. I always stay away from resorts as much as I can as I love to explore different regions of a country. But finding a nice balance between relaxing and exploring is always good. I am heading to Mexico City in a month and have looked at these tours: 10 Best Mexico Tours & Trips 2025/2026 - TourRadar

Too many to choose from though.
