Bruges vs Ghent: which one for a day trip from Brussels?

Only have 1 day to spare on a Brussels work trip and I want to see either Bruges or Ghent. Both are about 1 hour by train. The internet says Bruges is prettier but more touristy, Ghent is more “real” but less photogenic.

Is that accurate? I care about good beer, walkability, and a couple hours of just wandering around beautiful streets. If Bruges is going to feel like Disneyland in July I’d rather go to Ghent. But if the “touristy” thing is overblown and Bruges is genuinely magical, I’ll deal with the crowds.

The key thing to think about for you now is how much crowd‑tolerance you have in July versus how much you value that ‘storybook’ atmosphere.

Whichever you choose, make an early start.

You could even do both; I would, with Bruges first - before the tourists arrive.

I really liked Bruges! It hasn’t been fully overrun with tourism YET - and I found it really fun to walk around and explore
