Hi, this will be my first time in Egypt, and I would like to know what the best places are to learn about the history of the pharaohs. I am very interested in learning about the history of ancient Egypt, from its foundation to the present day.
I have been to Cairo for a few days and while it is a busy city, there is so much to do and see. If you find some inspirational and knowledgable guides they can make all the difference. Went to the Cairo Museum, the pyramids and did a tour of the city itself and learned so much about everything in just a day. But if you really want to dive in I would recommend doing a tour through the country. I am visual guy and like to see and experience the places where it all took place instead of just listening to stories in a museum for example. Hi, not sure if this is too late, but I highly recommend the GEM or Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza. I booked a tour, so they could explain how it’s laid out. She gave me a great history tour while we were there.
That looks amazing @Moodymel - I’ll be going there in 3 weeks!
Did you also go to the old Egyptian Museum in Cairo? not sure if that is still worth a visit too?
Just wanted to come back and share - theNational Museum of Egyptian Civilisation (NMEC), is perfect for what you are after. It runs through history from ancient Egypt, Greek, Roman, Coptic, Islamic, and also has the Royal Mummies hall with over 20 mummies (including Ramsess II). Very fascinating Museum in Cairo which was a highlight for me! GEM was also very good!
Alexandria is also a good place to learn about the changes from Pharonic to Greek/Roman history. But Luxor takes the prize for the best place to learn about Ancient Egypt in my view!
I went to the old museum and the new one. The new one was only partly open so only saw the main hallway (but still impressive). Majority of the artifacts and items were still in the old one. I like the old one a lot. of course an older building but I think it added to the flair of the experience. Not sure how much they are still displaying at the old museum. Best to ask your tour guide.
@NewTraveler2026 From my experience in Egypt, the best way to truly understand the history of the pharaohs is a combination of Cairo and Upper Egypt.
In Cairo, the Egyptian Museum (and especially the new Grand Egyptian Museum gives you the foundation — artifacts, mummies, treasures, and the overall timeline of ancient Egypt.
But honestly, history really “clicked” for me when I went to Luxor during my Nile cruise. Walking through Karnak Temple, the Valley of the Kings, and seeing the tombs of the pharaohs in person makes everything feel real in a way museums alone cannot.
If you can, I highly recommend going south to Luxor and Aswan. Seeing the temples along the Nile adds context and depth that you just don’t get from reading panels in a museum.
Also, having a knowledgeable guide made a huge difference for me. Egypt’s history is incredibly layered, and a good guide helps connect all the pieces together.
For a first trip focused on pharaoh history:
Cairo (museum + pyramids) + Luxor (Valley of the Kings, Karnak) would be ideal.
I did a similar itinerary through this tour, which I found very well organized and informative: Nile Jewel - 5* Cruise by Timeless Tours with 1089 Tour Reviews (Code: 86404) - TourRadar
